My entry for the artstation challenge Neo Tokyo: exponential reality.
The Dinge, a city trapped in perpetual night. Centuries of war across the planet have blackened the skies with a nigh solid layer of pollution and ash so thick not even a trickle of sunlight is brave enough to make it to the ground.
An economy dedicated solely to war was unprepared for the fragile peace won through weariness rather than martial might and world governments fell, leaving major conurbations in the hands of criminal cartels.
The countless veterans of the wars, often wounded, need expensive cybernetics and more importantly something to do other than war, and find themselves employed by the myriad crime families in their street wars. Coupled with the flood of redundant ex-military tech the streets of the Dinge are more dangerous than ever, but to the few civilians left this laughable period of lawless “peace” is far preferable to entire nations employing doomsday weapons on each other.
